Why is this young man so restless? Why can't he settle down? He loves his family, no question about it. 

The answer may be in the old lady in that big house. She never really loved him, never believed in his qualities. She never approved whatever he did even if he tried, and he tried.
This is the "double bind", how people are imprisoned and manipulated: whatever they do they are always wrong.

Somehow this "double bind" made him a rebel instead of a conformist. Rebellion is better than conformism because it's in the right way to maturity and responsability.
That's why it's so sad to see how close this family was of a good life... if only...
